Sulfamethoxazole is a synthetic antibacterial drug,which is used in combination with trimethoprim (Bactrim, Septra) for the treatment or prevention of infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria. Sulfamethoxazole acts by inhibiting folic acid synthesis via enzyme called dihydropteroate synthase. — NCATS

Bacterial dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor
Sulfamethoxazole (bacterial dihydropteroate synthase inhibitor) and trimethoprim (bacterial dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor) display synergistic activity.
Active against aerobic gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli,Klebsiella species,Enterobacter species,Morganella morganii,Proteus mirabilis,Proteus species,Proteus vulgaris,Shigella flexneri,Shigella sonnei) and also displays activity against Pneumocystis jirovecii.
