Mechanism of action
- Bacterial penicillin-binding proteinINHIBITOR
Bacterial penicillin-binding protein inhibitor
Cefsulodin is a semi-synthetic, third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with a narrow spectrum of activity. It has activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus but little activity against other bacteria. It binds to and inactivates penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. Inactivation of PBPs interferes with the cross-linkage of peptidoglycan chains necessary for bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity. This results in the weakening of the bacterial cell wall and causes cell lysis. Cefsulodin inhibits PBP 1a and 1b.
