Polycyclic aromatic polyketides with tetracyclic angular benz(a)anthracene skeletons. Angucyclines and related angucyclinones are produced by Actinomycetes, e.g., STREPTOMYCES, using type II polyketide synthase involving condensation of acetyl CoA and 9 malonyl-CoA.
